Kenyairra Gadson is a Black Queer woman facing up to 65 years in prison for protecting herself from an attack in 2018 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Kenyairra suffered years of harassment, homophobia, intimidation, and abuse from a man in her community. On the evening of October 28, 2018, Kenyairra and a friend were accosted by this man, along with a group of his peers. After leaving a bar, Kenyairra's abuser followed Kenyairra and her friend into a parking lot and began attacking them.
Kenyairra defended herself in the only way she could when she fired a single shot at her attackers, fatally wounding someone aiding her long-term abuser. For this desperate act of self-defense, in November 2018, Kenyairra was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, and incarcerated on a $100,000 bond.
Kenyairra spent over 18 months behind bars, until July 2020, when she was finally bailed out by the Freethe350 Bail Fund.
Unfortunately, in January, 2022, Kenyairra was found guilty and now faces up to 65 years in prison. her sentencing is on May 6, but it's not too late to fight for Kenyairra's freedom.
