Take the Money From the Systems That Harm Us. Put It Into the Systems That Sustain Us.
Wisconsin spends hundreds of millions on policing and prisons. Schools are underfunded. Housing is unaffordable. Communities lack the resources they need to thrive. This is not a budget shortfall. It is a set of choices — and those choices can be changed.
Every dollar spent on policing is a dollar not spent on housing. Every dollar spent on prisons is a dollar not spent on schools. Every dollar spent on surveillance is a dollar not spent on healthcare, on youth programs, on community-led safety, on the things that actually keep people alive.
Divest/Invest is not a metaphor. It is a budget demand with a clear moral logic: the systems that cause harm should be starved of resources. The systems that sustain life should be funded abundantly. This is not radical. It is basic math.
In Wisconsin, this means:
FAN follows the leadership of grassroots organizations fighting for divestment from punishment and investment in community. We provide research support — the data that shows what Wisconsin spends and where. We provide mobilization capacity — the bodies at budget hearings, the calls to alders, the public pressure that makes divestment politically possible. We provide the political legitimacy that comes from a broad coalition demanding that the budget reflect our values.
